It gives us great pleasure to share the first ever Brewing Folk podcast with you. Richard Norris is our guest, talking us through his new compilation album DEEP IN THE WOODS, as well as taking us through his career in music, including The Grid, Beyond the Wizards Sleeve right up to today with his Music for Healing series.
We first witnessed Richard perform at the wonderful Sea Change festival in Totnes back in 2021. Accompanied by Inner Strings the scene was set, amazing visuals and some hard psychedelic 60s sounds, well that was the first hour! Richard continued to play for around 4 hours taking a packed Totnes Cinema on a musical journey from the 60s through to Acid House. Coupled with the truly amazing live visuals provided by Chris, it was night that stayed with me. I knew we had to invite Richard down to see us and reproduce that experience here at the Tap Room in Penryn.
During that visit, we met Richard and we talked about the his new compilation that he was putting out on Cherry Red Records. We agreed to make a beer for the release of this record (well cd, come on Cherry Red where’s the vinyl?) which we are really excited to announce is now available to purchase along with the album from the Verdant Brewing web shop.
The beer is a 5% Pale Ale, hopped well with Motueka, Mosaic & Strata. It’s a New England beer so expect hazy yellow appearance, little bitterness and some sweetness.
The official line is that it’s a session-able, moreish, hop saturated New England style pale ale with a trio of wonderfully fruity hops. Perfect for a night in by the fire and some 60s - 70s Folk, Funk, Psych for company!
Available now from Verdant Brewing Co
A Triple CD set collecting rare cuts and cult favourites from the worlds of psychedelic, pastoral and funky folk, 1968-1975.
Focusing on the outpouring of psychedelic folk flavours that emerged swiftly after the first psychedelic era.
Featuring some wonderful selections from long collectable acts such as Sunforest, Mellow Candle, Trees, Heron, Trader Horne, Christine Harwood and many more.
Compiled by Richard Norris, the compilation is themed around UK and Irish music from that hallowed period, and comes with a 7000 word essay and sleeve notes from the musician/producer.
Celebrating the collision of traditional folk with new psychedelic studio techniques, new and exotic textures, and a developing groove. It’s a wide and broad range of styles, drawing from folk, its oral storytelling tradition, and also from jazz, beat, rhythm and blues, and the more mind opening sounds of psychedelia.
Housed in a 3CD digi-pack, designed in a striking wraparound collage by Lyndon Pike.
